The classroom building utilizes materials secured immediately after the January 2010 earthquake by Plan International. Each classroom measures 50 square meters and can accommodate up to 50 children. The lightweight wood structure with concrete base, steel straps, diagonal bracing and plywood panels provides a high degree of earthquake and tropical wind storm resistance.
Large roof overhangs shelter the classroom interiors from intense rains and provide shading from the intense sun. A wood slat wall system and continuous roof vent promote cross passive ventilation and cooling.
A simplified construction process and limited number of prefabricated construction components make the classroom design well suited for post-earthquake Haiti. The design, approved in April 2010, is one of the first transitional school designs endorsed by the Haitian Ministry of Education.
Plan International, a non-profit organization active in Haiti since 1973, is in the process of building 76 of the classroom buildings, a total of 152 classrooms, in the areas of Jacmel and Croix des Bouquets.
